The vision of the Northwestern Medicine Scholars Program is to offer enriching experiences that enable outstanding high school students to explore and be
better prepared for potential careers in medicine as future physicians and biomedical scientists.
Those selected are provided with the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s leading physicians and researchers at a premier academic medical center in order to enrich and inform their career decisions through a variety of supportive activities. Continuation in the program is interest and performance driven.
Aligned with the goals of Northwestern Medicine, the partnership is designed to attract, develop, and retain top talent in a culture that values innovation and excellence in the highest level of scholarship, and provides the resources to support continued growth and success. This program will be a national model for scholastic excellence for underrepresented populations in the greater Chicago area.
We proudly announced this new educational partnership joining George Westinghouse College Prep with Northwestern Medicine in 2011. It is our goal to offer students an enriching experience to help them explore potential careers in medicine as future physicians or biomedical scientists.
Westinghouse College Prep students have the opportunity to apply. These students are selected to go behind the scenes at Northwestern, where they can learn from some of the country’s top physicians and researchers.
This exciting partnership, focusing
on excellence in the advancement of medicine, features experiences such as the following:
• Co-teaching between Westinghouse teachers and Northwestern physicians and researchers,
• Mentoring from physicians and researchers,
• Summer intensives for course credit,
• College access and entrance support,
• ACT test preparation.

George Westinghouse College Prep (GWCP) reopened its school doors in fall 2009. This school serves students from across the city of Chicago. GWCP is the first selective Chicago public high school to have dual enrollment criteria: selective enrollment and college-to-careers. The school serves a diverse student population from nearly 300 public and private elementary schools, with roughly 30 percent of its students residing within a two and one-half mile radius of the school.
GWCP provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, with four years of English, mathematics, science,
social studies, and World Language. In addition, the school offers over 12 advanced placement options, starting at the freshmen level. Students are also provided with a broad range of elective courses including
statistics, graphic design, economics and band. Included in the college-to-careers program are four innovative academies: Broadcast
Technology & Media, Business, Health Sciences and IT – Oracle.
Each academy is equipped with industry equivalent technology. Students are required to obtain industry related certifications prior to graduation. The beyond curriculum program offerings include academic debate, math club, environmental club, science club, cultural collectivo, art club, theater and dance program, and 18 interscholastic teams. The international cultural immersion program is the latest addition to the current offerings. Students, teachers, and parents visited China, Spain, the United Kingdom and France over the past two school years, studying the Chinese, European and Spanish cultures.
